Violence in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Posted in: Photo Projects | By: Recave | 14 Comments »

João Pina, opens up a fearless view into the parallel universe of Rio de Janeiro: Favela and Asfalto. It is quite rare that one gets such an up-close and personal look inside the slums of Rio de Janeiro. One can see hand-to-hand drug dealings, young gangsters posing with their weapons, as well as a priest who has made exorcism his mission, because he feels there is no other hope left for these young men. It is a captivating journey through the somber reality of this antithetic megacity, Rio de Janeiro.

Río de Janeiro, Brasil… Colombia… Venezuela… México… on fire!!! Great work… But the violence and poverty always will be there…

    Again and again!!!

Fuck u.

    Brilliant, inspired.

@Priscila – Claro, nada disso acontece no Rio. Ah! É estereótipo, por sinal.

Amazing work but yeah, it’s stereotyped. Just like photos from the Middle East it’s like everyone there is dead and live in fear. The photographer wanted to cause impact to be know, but still there’s nothing original there.

NOTHING ORIGINAL????? I think thats part of the point that these type of scenes are not original they are everywhere. Do we get upset when we see images of carnaval as “the” images of brazil? I don’t hear complains when that happens, they are beautiful images of a horrible reality that not only plagues rio, but chicago, mexico…

I agree with benevolo, this photos aren’t here to show you a new world, there here to remind us of the real world we live in. We can all create a utopic world of our own in our minds and that’s fine, I do it to, but that doesn’t mean that reality is gone. The picture shown here are a mirror to the fear, the despair, the hopelessness lived day by day. There’s no originality in that, it’s been and allways be there, thanks to photographers like João Pina, our eyes won’t be closed.

Excelente trabalho, corajoso. Esteriótipo? pergunta para a moça grávida ali se ela concorda.

  9. 9 Milan said at 12:45 pm on July 26th, 2010:

Art doesn’t always come from unique view of the world, presented by an artist, but very often from his talent to capture world just the way it is…
This is art photography, in same amount as it is documentary photography… Magnificent job…

O trabalho do fotógrafo é com certeza maravilhoso, e sim, nos ajuda a lembrar que o Brasil não é só Carnaval. Mas a frase “the somber reality of this antithetic megacity, Rio de Janeiro” realmente me irritou. Aqui sim está o esteriótipo. Não rotulem o Rio dessa maneira POBRE.

  11. 11 Dannica said at 10:16 pm on July 26th, 2010:

Wow, these pictures… really felt them all.

  12. 12 Bruno said at 11:52 pm on July 26th, 2010:

Great artistic view of those scenes. But i think that this is not stereotype. I think that it is a point of view. Maybe you see this reality in a different perspective. But it is what it is. We have the violence issue in almost all the countries (like, vaticano probably don’t have this – at least i never heard anything about it =P ).
But i think that this phrase that Carol mencioned is actually miswritten.
If you put in a balance, Rio is so violent as another cities in south america, in central america, US, africa and everywhere.

    That’s my point.

It’s so sad to see young men and women having to live in areas full of crime.
